Additional Tips for Using this Website

WORKING WITH HTML FORMAT FILES:

Most of the documents posted on the WERC website are in HTML format. HTML files can be conveniently viewed with all WWW Browsers in windows of varying sizes. The text as it appears in the browser window can be printed using the browser print function

All or portions of HTML files can be copied by using the copy-to-clipboard and paste-from-clipboard method. Highlight and copy the portion of the document you want to copy using your browser's edit function and then paste it into an open text or word processing file using your text or word processing software. You will find that text copied in that way from an HTML file places a hard return at the end of each line as it appeared on the screen from which it was cut. Such hard returns can be removed individually or by a block search and replace procedure in your text or word processor, enabling the text to word wrap in a manner consistent with the settings established in your document. Because HTML documents are coded text files, saving them to disk directly will save all of the HTML codes along with the text of the document. Saving HTML files to disk should therefore be the copying method of choice if you intend to locally view the files with your browser or if you intend to locally view and edit the HTML source code with text editor software.

WORKING WITH WORD PROCESSOR FORMAT FILES

Some of the documents on the WERC website are viewable on line in the Rich Text Format (RTF) format, and many of the documents on the site are downloadable in that format. For example, WERC forms are viewable on-line, indivdiually savable, and downloadable in sets in RTF format. Various other documents including the digests, statutes and rules are viewable, copyable and savable in HTML and also downloadable in RTF, as well.

To make any use of word processor format files you will need a program capable of viewing files of the format involved (A Microsoft Word viewer can be downloaded from its publisher at no cost, as well.). If you can configure your browser to view files bearing an ".rtf" file extension by launching a program capable of viewing Rich Text Format or MS Word files, then you can view the forms files on-line with your browser. Otherwise, before viewing the forms, you will need to save the individual form file or download one or downloadable sets of forms. For all other downloadable files, to make any use of the RTF files, you will need to download the self-executing compressed versions to a location on your disk that you specify and then execute (i.e. run the ".exe" file) to place an uncompressed copy of the file in the same disk location which you can then open with the appropriate word processing or file viewing software. Downloading procedures differ somewhat depending on the browser you are using. To download word processor or compressed self-executing files with Netscape and Microsoft browsers, hold down the "Shift" key and click on the link to the link to the document you wish to download. The browser will display a standard "Save As..." dialog box. For information on browsers not listed here, refer to your Browser manual or Browser help system.

WORKING WITH ADOBE ACROBAT PDF (PORTABLE DOCUMENT FORMAT) FILES

Some of the files available on this site are PDF documents. Your web browser may already be configured so that you are able to click on the link to the PDF document to either open it for viewing and printing or save it to disk. You must have the free Acrobat Reader program installed to view or print PDF documents. Adobe Acrobat Reader downloading and installation instructions are available at: http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html.

To view a PDF file, click on the link to that file. To print all or part of a PDF file that you are viewing, click on the Acrobat Reader window's printer button and specify the page or pages you wish to print.

To download and save a PDF file to disk, you can use the pop-up menu in your browser. On a Macintosh, hold the mouse button down on the link until the menu pops up. In Windows, click and release the right mouse button on the link. Select the item from the menu that indicates it will "save" or "download" the file to the disk. Select the file type before you click OK (the file type should be PDF or source, depending on your browser).

In some brower configurations it is also possible to copy a text block from a PDF file. To do so, click on the Acrobat Reader select text ("abc"), and use your mouse to highlight the text block you wish to copy. (If the block you want extends to more than one page, set the display mode to "continuous" by clicking the page size box at the bottom of the Acrobat Reader screen before attempting to mark the multiple-page block.). Once the text block is highlighted, copy it to the clipboard by clicking on the Acrobat Reader copy button (two overlapping pages). The copy button only appears after copyable text has been highlighted. You can then paste the resultant block in any text editing or word processing application in the customary fashion. The pasted block will be without much of its original formatting.

For additional information on configuring or using your browser with PDF files, consult your browser manual or help system.
