Searching the WERC Website with Google

Google Search: [entire site] [interest awards] [search help]

The "entire site" and "interest awards" links above open to customized advanced search screens using the Google search engine.

(WERC has blocked Google and other commercial search engines from searching labor relations decisions, grievance awards and personnel appeals, in response to privacy complaints and concerns.  For a comprehensive set of search links using the State of Wisconsin's Ultraseek search engine [click here].  Searchable databases of WERC materials can also be found on WisBar as regards grievance awards and labor relations decisions.)

Google searches allow the user to: see the initial instance of each search terms in its text context, view PDF file text converted to HTML with all search terms highlighted, and perform searches limited to files found by the previous search. Ultraseek searches allow the user to: see results listed by document title hits followed by body text hits or with hits listed roughly in date order of file creation. Because Ultraseek is maintained by the State of Wisconsin, its reliability for comprehensiveness of coverage and promptness of availability of newly posted files is better known than Google's.

To Google Search WERC website files, enter your search terms in place of the words "enter search terms here" on the advanced search screen that appears when you click on one of the links above, adjust any of the other search parameters listed on the screen, and click the "search" button (or press the Enter key on your keyboard). A search results page should appear within seconds, listing results consisting of the file title or portion thereof, text portions showing the initial instances of each search term in context, and various other options and information relating to the file found. Clicking on the title of one of the listed results opens to the beginning of the found file. In most instances the file will be in the PDF format. If the result involved offers "view HTML", then clicking that link will reveal the text of the file converted on the fly by Google to HTML format with each of the search terms highlighted.

To find a word within a found PDF file, use the Find and Find again buttons on your Acrobat plug-in toolbar (the Find button on your browser will not find hits within PDF files.)

To return to the results list from a found file, use your browser's BACK command. To Google search only the files found by the previous search, click on the "Search Within Results" link at the bottom of the results page.

To search for files containing text within a range of years, enter the beginning and ending year separated by "..", e.g., 1998..2006." For other Google search tips [click here].
