WisBar Case Law Search Tips

SIMPLE SEARCH is a quick way to find case law based on a full-text search. You can use 2 Boolean operators: and & or. For example, a search for [corporate and liability] will search for case law with both the term corporate and the term liability in the text of the opinion.

If you use more than one Boolean operator in the Keywords field, you can use parentheses to indicate the order in which to process the search. For example, the search (libel and slander) or defamation is very different from the search libel and (slander or defamation).

You may also select the number of cases to be listed per page and choose the order of the case display. Click the Go button to view your results. Once your results are displayed, the highlighter will show you 1 or 2 of the keywords found for each case. Click on one of the keywords to go to the particular place in the text of the case document. Please note that using more than one Boolean operator will disable the keyword highlighter. The search is not case-sensitive.

ADVANCED SEARCH is a more targeted way of searching the case law database. You may search by Keywords, Docket Number, Public Citation, Party name(s) and Date ranges. The less information you give, the wider the search results will be.
